Hi Friends! Today I wanted to give my two cents about rugs. I am a little obsessive when it comes to rugs but I know how expensive they can be, especially for a large area rug. So today I just wanted to share my input about rug sizes and an amazing rug source with great prices!

The right size and shape rug can completely change the look and feel of a room. Rugs are often thought of as the 5th wall of a room, so if doing something too permanent, like painting or wallpapering a room, is too daunting for you, try a rug! I have learned the hard way, through countless trial and error (many purchases and returns) that the size of the rug you buy for your space is the most important.

This is the space I had the hardest time finding the right rug. We have dark hardwood floors and without a rug the room just felt cold and unfinished. When we moved in I was using a rug we already owned that was much too small for the space but I wasn’t sure what I wanted yet. I think a rug should fit the furniture you already have, set up your living room the way you like and let that determine the size of rug.

The rug should not be shorter than the length of your couch. If your furniture is in the middle of the room the furniture should fit within the rug, if your couch is against a wall, then the rug being halfway under it will look perfect!

It all starts with the size of your room and bedroom set. If you have a very large room, you might want to buy a very large rug for the foundation of your furniture. The rug should come out from either side of the bed. That can either include nightstand or not. The rug can be up towards the head board, in the middle if it is large, or towards the end of the bed. Another idea is to get two rugs for either side of your bed, they can be more like runners from your nightstands to the end of your bed. A good way to test the size of rug you want before purchasing is to use painters tape to mark out the area where the rug will go!

The only rug we have in our kitchen is a runner between our island and main countertop. The runner shouldn’t be as long as your island but fit within the space if not a little shorter than your island. It will be more eye appealing this way. If you are putting a rug under your dining table it should be bigger than your dining table and chairs. Even when your chairs are pulled out, everything should fit within your rug. Now rooms don’t always allow for such a big rug, if this is the case, buy the biggest rug you can, and try to allow it big enough that when the chairs and pushed in, the front legs are sitting on the rug.

If you have a round dining room set, round tables usually look best on round rugs! Once again choose a rug where the entire set will fit within the rug. A general rule of thumb for me is try to avoid rectangular rugs with round tables and vis versa.
